Painting by committee, Commission for Brunel University.

I've no remembrance of how I got this commission, I must have got talking to someone at an exhibition opening party and said I could do it. The piece was to go between two science blocks, Chemistry and Biology I think, on the retirement of one of the Professors. There were two main problems, I couldn't paint and I had no idea were to start. I borrowed an overhead projector and made transparencies of text books then collaged it all together and made a 6' x 3' cartoon.

A committee of Professors met to discuss and finalise the work. Everyone wanted their own speciality prominent. It took hours. In the end agreement was reached, make the DNA spiral dominant, emphasise this, underplay that. I lived on campus for two weeks while I did the work and got extremely well paid. Eva helped on it. It was a strange two weeks in the summer, surrounded by foreigners on short courses to learn English.
