Caro Rotterdam, the gallery is between two department stores on the first floor, I'm setting up Ivors work and it's all so egalitarian. The director and assistants and cleaners all have lunch and coffee round the same table. I am in a movie, dressed in my white bakers outfit. I say to Caro 'What does a guy do to have fun in this town?'. She tells me about a bar that's pretty good and I can't understand her directions, 'After work, why don't you show me.' We go to the bar, I keep buying drinks, I'm in a movie, her boy friend arrives. Me, her, him sitting in a line at the bar. I think 'fuck it, it's my movie', and put my hand on her thigh, she says 'I've got to go, but I'll be back.' I tell the barman to leave the bottle, it's Old Genevers, a type of gin. She comes back. I take her back to the hotel. I have a bottle of duty free Glenfiddicht, we drink, she has a good time, I have a good time. Ivor has booked me into a cheap hotel, my window is two feet from a wall, it's okay I'm in a movie. And then I got to know her.

I'm only there for three days, the next day she takes me out. We're sitting at a pavement caffe against the rope and the street, she's rolling a joint, a cop is comeing along, I say 'cool it, it's a cop', she looks up and offers him the joint, he replies, I say, 'What?', she says 'He's on duty'. coool. Its still my movie, but it's becoming hers as well.
Last night, we meet her friend Honey, beautiful blonde, keeps taking Belladonna to make her eyes big. Mini skirt, mouth red as a lamprey. The three of us have a good time, back to Caro's without Honey. tommorrow I have to leave, would I like to stay and maybe me, Caro and Honey could have a good time together. She's offering, for fucks sake. 'Babe, I've got to go.' |
So that night she takes me to a theatre thing, it's down a dark alley, no light, feel the walls, knock on the door, a hatch opens 'who are you?' 'Caro and friend', we go in. A small theatre with ranked seats, small bar. We sit down after climbing up the tiers to meet her friends, joints go back and forth, I ask 'When does it start,' 'It finished an hour ago .' Coool

The next morning in her place, we're in bed on the floor, the door bell goes. Guy comes in, long hair, from the Social, seems she was claiming benefit while in the States, shopped by her ex-boyfriend. She has to pay it back so they increase the benefits to cover it. Coool. |
Ivor, the things I gave up for you. Round the table in the gallery, last day, the bill from the Hotel, £20 extra, 'I never used room sevice, what's it for?' The Director says, 'Apparently its for a woman.' Caro comes with me to the airport in the taxi, we arrive, I kiss her and say 'Don't get out.'
