'View of Britain from the north' Whitechapel Gallery 1980 something. I gave Tony a hand with this though my participation was pretty minimal. I've still got a bit that he rejected. The scene was very like the story with Richard Long in Milan, we were working on the floor putting out bits of plastic, after a while, when Tony had removed the tenth bit that I'd put down, he suggested I went for a cup of coffee. The idea was that we percieve our country in a particular way and this view was how the Vikings would have seen us. He had an incredible brain and tenacity. I went to see him in Stuggart on my way from Freiberg to Berlin in 79. There was a huge sculpture show and competion all over the city. A local boy won and Tony came second. Artist and Galleries from all over Europe were there, Longsdale from the Lisson promoting Tony like mad. On the train back to his home in Wuppertal he was reading an Italian phrase book, I asked why and he said, 'Italy is were its going to be happening next.' By the time we got to his place he was rattling off phrases perfectly. Left, Tony's wedding day in Fulham, very low key affair. His wife was an Olympic swimmer. With offspring. |
