I liked Victorian stuff, my Dad had a shop called 'Victoriana', I liked sentimental paintings and the Pre-Raphaelites, also I liked commemorative sculpture. I was working with plaster, casting panels on sheets of glass to get a smooth finish, putting colour on the glass so it bled into the plaster. They followed on from the earlier work, were I thought I was trying to make some kind of enigmatic visual poetry. These, I hoped, would be more operatic, grander, with at least some authority as discrete objects. Mood, in the sense of ambience, was important and I wanted a sense of imperfect recollection, things half remembered. |
